Description & Services
Description (Service) Agency organizes volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty.

To make home ownership affordable to low-income families, Habitat requires no down payment and uses an interest free, long term mortgage. Mortgage payments made by families are used to fund more housing. There is no cash down payment required but the family chosen to buy a Habitat home must be willing to become a partner with Habitat by working to help build their home and/or as a volunteer for the organization. Prospective Habitat homeowners must complete a written application which is assessed by the Family Selection Committee. Once chosen, the family must complete 500 hours of volunteer work which is called "sweat equity" for Habitat. Most of the "sweat equity" hours can be completed on the build of the chosen family's home. The motto for Habitat for Humanity is "a hand up, not a hand out".
